4 Top Tips to Find the Best Environmental Consultancy

While mankind may have made rapid progress in recent times, what is also true is that in the process a lot of damage has also been done to nature in many parts of the globe. However, there is also some good news available on the front. It is in the form of environmental consultancies that are available now. If you are someone who is either interested in buying or selling a property, these environmental consultants are there to help you. You can find them in almost every city in Canada. From Edmonton to Ontario or Toronto, a simple online search is all that you need to find them. Whether it is
Phase 1 Site Assessment or Record of Site Assessment that you want to be done, you can count on their expertise. These consultancies have teams that can do various types of environmental assessments. Here are a few handy tips on finding one suited to your needs.

Go through referrals

Just as the case with finding out about any other service, perhaps the best way to find a good environmental consultancy is through referrals. Do you know someone who has used their service before? If so, why not contact them? Find out the kind of assessment for which they sought the help of consultants. You can also ask some of your family members, who may know a good consultancy. Your friends could also be of help. Then, of course, there is the internet, whose help you can seek. Find out about the leading environmental consultancies in your city. Go through their websites and find out about the kind of projects that they usually handle. Note down their contact details.

Online search

You must do some research on your part. You should not be left tongue-tied whenever you are discussing with an environmental professional. Make sure that you have a good idea about the property you are discussing. Make small notes and keep them with you. This will help you whenever you are interviewing potential environmental consultancies. Patience is the key here. While you need not become an expert in the subjects, it does help if you at least have the basic knowledge of the topics.

List down questions

Make a list of questions that you want to ask the environmental professional. Clarify all your doubts. If it is Record of Site Condition that you are interested in then find out more from the consultant about the subject. Get to know from them about how they go about doing the assessment. What are the different types of studies that they undertake? Do they study the vegetation on the property? What about the study of contamination, if any on the property? What is the methodology that they employ to conduct their studies? What about the team of experts that they have onboard? The more informed you are the better are the decisions that you will make. Make it a point to be a keen listener. Note down points, for it will be useful in your subsequent discussions with the environmental professionals.

Biological Assessment and Its Factors

What is the purpose of a geotechnical investigation? Determine the depth, depth and thickness of the subsurface layers to the required depth, determine the depth of the water level, obtain information about the depth of a rock surface, obtain characteristics of the rock as to classification, state of change and variations and obtain data from mechanical parameter of compressibility, shear strength and permeability for the layers of interest. Is it worth doing? This investigation is fundamental to start a foundation and later to make a work feasible.

The Biological Assessment is divided into the recognition phase, the exploration phase, the detailing phase, and the monitoring phase. In the reconnaissance phase the objective is to obtain information about the nature of the local geological formations and main features of the subsoil, as well as to make an analysis of the area that is most feasible to do a work, to estimate what kind of foundation would be necessary and what this cost, quality, safety and environmental change in the work, also having to choose the most appropriate methods to do the research.

Factors for geotechnical research

To do the geotechnical investigation, it is necessary to choose the method that will be used, where we have a direct and indirect method. The direct method allows direct observation of the subsoil.
In this way, samples are collected along drilling or excavation or measurement of soil properties with direct contact of the probe with the soil. In the indirect method, it is possible to estimate the geotechnical properties of soils by the measurement of soil magnitude by remote sensing or geophysical tests.

Schedule.

The initial recognition of the soil is done visually, the topography of the site must first be observed, and if there is any slope in the area, its stability should be checked later.

Then check if there is a possibility of having a landfill, a swamp or a mine of water near the land. It is also verified if that soil is contaminated, this may be necessary depending on the use that that soil previously had of its possible execution of the project.

After that, a check should be made in the neighborhood and surroundings, such as the types of foundations that were used, and the state of preservation of neighborhood constructions.

Methods.

In the field trials with respect to direct methods, we have several types of tests, the main ones being: simple recognition probing with SPT, CPT in situ Cone Penetration Test, standard test method for performing the flat plate dilatometer (foreign method) , standard test method for pre-bored pressure meter testing in soils (foreign method) and the rehearsal test in situ.

Indirect methods are also field trials and will be verified through these methods that we call geophysicists. It is obtained the data in the indirect or geophysical method through reflection or geophones or refraction or electrical resistivity.

Guidelines.

To proceed with the Biological Assessment, it is necessary to follow some guidelines, such as: identifying the purpose of the work and its proportions, the characteristics of the terrain, experiences and social practices and the cost and feasibility of the work.

These investigations are of paramount importance so that those who intend to build do not end up investing money in the wrong place at the wrong time. For when we talk about experiences and social practices, we must also analyze whether there have already been problems with buildings in that terrain, about accidents, such as landslides, among others.

4 Signs That You Are Fit To Be an Environmental Consultant

The last five odd decades has seen the world progress immensely. There has been rapid industrialization in almost every part of the world. Governments are now spending more on developing world-class infrastructure. There has been a real estate boom everywhere. It is no different in the case of Calgary too, just as in the case with other parts of Canada. However, this all this development has come at a cost to the environment. This is why people concerned today are more careful when it comes to approving projects. This is an area where there is no other option but to seek the help of environmental consultants. So, these days if it is Environmental Site Assessment Services, the first person to be given a call is an experienced consultant. However, what are the attributes you need to become a successful environmental professional? Well here is the list.

You like doing research
Environmental science is all about research. For example, if you are doing Phase 1 Environmental Site Assessment or biological resource assessment, then the first thing that you need to do is thorough research. You will have to check each and every part of the project site. It is only after lot of research that you will be fined out whether there are any signs of contamination in the vicinity. So, if you are someone who is passionate about research, then this is the right profession for you.

You have good communication skills
Contrary to what many people think, environmental consultancy is not just about getting qualified in science subjects. It also involves having good communication skills. This is because consultants need to deal with a variety of people. They should for example sometimes deal with irritable customers. They also need to deal with Government authorities. Then there is the small matter of keeping their staff motivated enough to complete tasks on time. As you can see a consultant has a lot on his or her plate. The nature of the profession is such that you just cannot do without good communication skills.

You are a jack of all trades
A consultant is not merely an expert in a particular stream of science. You need to be a modern-day technocrat to achieve things. For example, if you are dealing with phase 1 assessment, then it is important that you have good knowledge in both botany and chemistry. Similarly, when working in rocky terrain you need to have sufficient knowledge of geology, although your core expertise may be in some other science. To put it in a nutshell, a good consultant will have good knowledge about different sciences.

You are a stickler to work ethics
It goes without saying that for success in any field you need to have good work ethics. It is no different in the case of environmental professionals. Theirs is a job which involves intense involvement with the project. They have to focus all their energies till the project is successfully executed. Since this involves a lot of dedication and passion, it is only someone with true love for the job who will be a right fit.

3 Sure Shot Tips to Choose an Environmental Consultant

Do you think selecting an environmental professional is an easy job? Think again, for even though they are not difficult to find, selecting one from the choice is a tough task indeed. You search at any Environmental Site Assessment Services; you are bound to find several good consultants. It is obvious that choosing one would be a difficult process. Here are some proven tips that will make the entire selection process easier.

Trust in one another

One of the fundamental things required for the successful completion of a project is complete trust in the consultant. A deep level of understanding is required. Remember, the work that environmental professionals do is not often easy to understand. There are several complicated methods that are involved. These consultants are usually dealing with things like water and soil about which we don’t know much. You therefore need to respect the kind of effort that the consultant is putting in to make the project a success. Even if there is some misunderstanding, they should be resolved with all understanding.

Even before the project begins, you should sit down and thrash things out. This would mean lesser misunderstandings later. Truthfulness is something that should be the foundation on which you should develop your relationship with the consultant. Remember a professional consultant will never lie. For example, if it is the phase 1 environmental site assessment and he or she is not satisfied with certain things in the project, a professional would frankly say so. This is always good for the project.
Whoever may be the consultant, remember one thing, key decisions will have to be taken by you. Even the consultant will be looking up to you for making the decisions. It is for this reason that you too need to be thorough with the project.

References

There are many who feel that asking an experienced consultant for references is not correct. Nothing could be further from the truth. You can always ask the consultant for some earlier work. It would be better if it is similar to your project. One good way would be to visit the project. Not for nothing do they say ‘seeing is believing’. There is nothing like seeing the project at close quarters. This will give you a good idea about the level of competency of the consultant.

The internet is a good place to start your search for a good consultant. There are scores of websites from where you can get the contact details of Environmental Consultants. Many of the leading consultants would generally have their own websites. You can go through them in detail. These websites will also have inputs on their earlier projects which you can go through in detail.

Quality first

The first thing that you need to look for in an environmental consultant is the quality. Never go in for a greenhorn just because he or she is charges less. Chances are that your project will also be doomed. Always choose an experienced consultant. An experienced consultant would have surely worked in a similar project as yours and stands a better chance of successfully completing your work.
